Types and characteristics of commonly used leather materials for bags. There are several classifications of commonly used leather materials for bags, depending on the method used.

(1) Classification by leather source: Leather can be classified into cowhide, sheepskin, pigskin, ostrich leather, crocodile leather, etc. Cowhide is further divided into yellow cattle hide, buffalo hide, yak hide, and hybrid cattle hide; sheepskin is divided into sheepskin and goatskin. Among the main types of natural leather materials, yellow cattle hide has a smooth and delicate surface, small pores, a dense and compact internal structure, high strength, and excellent durability. The leather has good fullness and elasticity, and good physical properties. Therefore, superior yellow cattle hide is generally used as the surface material for high-end leather products. Sheepskin, due to its light, soft, and elegant appearance, is very suitable for designing and making high-end women's bags. Each type of animal leather has its own characteristics and properties, and of course, the market prices vary greatly. The most widely used genuine leather in the bag industry is cowhide, followed by sheepskin and pigskin. Pigskin is usually used for casual fashion bags or linings. Ostrich leather and crocodile leather are relatively rare and precious, usually used to make luxury bags or combined with ordinary leather materials to create a unique decorative effect and enhance the artistic value of ordinary leather products.

(2) Classification by tanning method: Leather can be classified into chrome-tanned leather, vegetable-tanned leather, oil-tanned leather, and combination-tanned leather. Chrome-tanned leather is the most widely used type of leather and also one of the best-performing leathers. Clothing leather, bag leather, and shoe upper leather all use this tanning method. Vegetable-tanned leather is mostly brown or brownish-yellow and is generally used for the production of heavy leather products. Sometimes it is also used for the main surface material of professional or hard-shell bags.
